Malé Atoll
Yacht Charter in Malé Atoll in the Maldives
Malé Atoll is, like the other Maldivian islands, the top of an underwater mountain range. With an average height of 1-3 meters, the Maldives is the lowest country in the world. The islands have always been a welcomed sight for sailors, who have found shelter from the Indian Ocean here. The rich cultural diversity can be seen in everything from music to boat building - the music is often played on the local bodu beru, a bass drum, which is very similar to African drums. The Maldivian dhoni, a beautiful boat built by skilled local craftsmen, has a striking resemblance to a dhow, the traditional Arab sailing boat.
So, if your definition of paradise includes a simple lifestyle, where the main problem is which paradise beach to anchor by today - and where the sky is always blue and the sun is shining, you will not be disappointed with the Maldives.
You can visit the local fishing villages. The thousands of healthy coral reefs are some of the best in the world and offer fantastic snorkelling and diving experiences. You can also stop by uninhabited palm islands - or take advantage of the facilities at modern resorts. In short, the Maldives has all the ingredients for the perfect sailing holiday.
Sailing in the Maldives
The Maldives is blessed with tropical weather all year round - the temperature ranges between 22 °C and 33 °C. The islands are, like almost all other destinations in the Indian Ocean, subject to various monsoons, which influence the wind direction and the amount of rainfall. The south-west monsoon usually begins in June/July and brings the rain. The north-east monsoon from November to April results in dry weather and a weak wind. Sea breezes usually make temperatures more moderate, even on hot summer days. The tidal range is 2-3 meters.
You can sail all year round - but the ideal time to visit the islands is between November and April, making it the perfect place to get away from the cold in the northern hemisphere.
