Sailing in the Cyclades
With the many sights and destinations across this wide sailing area, you can choose to charter a yacht in the part of the region that best matches your preferences.
A sailing holiday in the Cyclades and the Aegean Sea generally means more wind – especially during the Meltemi in July and August. Sailing conditions can be more challenging than in the Saronic Gulf, and you may encounter wind strengths of 8–16 m/s. A Cyclades itinerary can start from Lavrio, or from one of the islands in the archipelago – for example Paros. Located at the southern tip of the Greek mainland’s east coast, with a short transfer from Athens, Lavrio is a practical starting point for exploring the Cyclades by yacht.
Season: This sailing area is closed from 1 December to 1 April.
Sailing conditions
In general, the Cyclades and the Aegean Islands are windier. During spring and autumn, winds are typically lighter and often come from the south. In July and August, winds are stronger. Sailing in the Cyclades is best suited to more experienced sailors.
Highlights
This region is among the most scenic in Greece. You will find beautiful bays and coves throughout the Cyclades, along with quiet villages, popular sights, historical locations and natural beaches. The area’s distinctive character is also reflected in its architecture – from whitewashed houses and village streets to castles, monasteries and churches perched high on the hillsides.
