Sailing in Phuket
The waters off Phuket's east coast are protected by the Andaman Sea, which ensures formidable and safe sailing all the year round. Based on the monsoons, there is a wet-and dry-season, which affect the weather and wind direction. On Thailand's west coast, the north-eastern monsoon begins in November and leads to light or moderate winds between 10-20 knots as well as cooler temperatures and drier conditions. In May, starts the south-west monsoon and south-westerly winds increase in strength to more than 20 knots when the rainy season peaks in September /October. During the remaining months of the rainy season, it rains only a few hours in the afternoon.
The Daily temperature is around 32°C from July to February and 16°C at night. From March to June the weather is warmer. The tidal range can be more than 8 feet, creating strong tidal currents in narrow channels. Navigation is often straightforward and is done by eye; however, it is important to keep a close eye on the chart and GPS because of the many coral reefs. A sailing holiday in Phuket is suitable for sailors with basic skills in coastal navigation.
